Decision Paralysis in Your 20s: Why Having More Options Feels Worse

Maybe you've heard it before...

Maybe you’ve heard from older family and friends- take advantage of your 20s! Or enjoy your freedom while you have it. Or I wish I was in my 20s again. Some people say just have fun. Other people say use this time to work hard and save up.

Everyone has an opinion.

Different Paths

And yeah… there are so many paths you could go down in your 20s… especially post graduation… Up until now, the path was clear: high school, apply to colleges, go to college. After graduation? There isn’t one path anymore.

Some people go straight to grad school. Some take a year to travel or teach abroad. Some move across the country. Some move back home. Some don’t even know what job they want yet. Some are already working their way up the ladder.

The Pressure to Get It "Right"

You might be comparing yourself to others. Wondering if you’re doing things right. Feeling like you’re missing something. Or like you’re constantly chasing something you can’t quite catch. Feeling like you’re running out of time.

The pressure to have a “good” 20s? Yeah. It can make you feel like you’re failing if you’re not having the time of your life.

Remember...

The grass is always greener. When you compare yourself to someone your age, it might look like they have it all together. But everyone struggles. Everyone. Every choice has pros and cons. According to career statistics compiled by the HIGH5Test content team (2025), Gen Z is expected to change jobs 10 times between ages 18–34. So if you see that person who has that “good” job and everything figured out… they probably won’t have it figured out forever!

Advice is always colored by someone else’s experience. When your mom says you should travel the world, maybe it’s because she never got to. That doesn’t mean it’s right for you. And society has changed — fewer young adults today hit all the “traditional” milestones like leaving home, marriage, a steady job, kids (U.S. Census Bureau, 2025). There isn’t a one-size-fits-all path anymore.

Every path you take will bring growth. No matter what you choose, you’re learning. You’re gaining experiences. You can take any situation and use it to grow.

So take a deep breath...

You’re not behind. You’re not failing. You’re right on time.
